Minister’s
Corner
Trust should not be a challenge

Father Jim Havens Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Today’s gospel for our mass is a very powerful passage. The passage is Mat-thew 18:1-5. In this passage the disciples ask "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of God?" Je-sus’ an-swer to th-em, and through th-em to us is very clear. "Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven." These words are crystal in their meaning. We must become reliant upon and trusting in God, in order to enter the Kingdom. Pretty simple message; yet these words are as challenging for us now, as when they were first spoken. Why? If the words are clear, and the intent is certain what could be the problem?

The answer to this question is rather obvious. The problem does not lie within the directive from God. The problems are located within each of us. We are called daily to walk closer with Jesus. We are called to overcome our sinfulness and pride. While these points make perfect sense. It is another story to live them out. Our own will and nature all to often stands in the way of God. Instead of relying on God, we rather find Resolutions" to whatever struggle we might be facing. Solutions outside of God’s intent are dangerous indeed. It is so easy to rationalize our position. It is so easy to "build up a case," to show that our approach is correct. God’s words remind us, we must have "childlike" trust.

For those among us; that might find these words a bit too challenging, there is hope. Our Lord Himself gives the hope offered. He asks that you come to Him, and ask for His help. Ask Him to do for you, what you might find hard to do. By so doing you will in fact be living out the words of today’s gospel.

For those of us, who know the beauty and power of God’s words, today’s gospel passage is but a reminder of His loving presence. We say thank you God.

Until the next time; may the Lord bless and keep you.
