Calvin Guy of Coffeeville recently donated $5,000 to the Coffeeville Beautification Club in memory of his wife Sandra. Mrs. Guy had been a member of the group over five years.

Guy said he donated the money because his wife had been so dedicated to making Coffeeville a more beautiful and productive rural southern town. She was known for having started the Adopt-A-Mile program in the Coffeeville community.

The club celebrated its ninth anniversary Oct. 1 and has 10 members. Members have raised funds and devoted time to help make the town more appealing. They maintain the flower boxes throughout town and the islands on Highway 84. Members also put up Christmas decorations and Guy is credited with emptying the trash cans around town.

Future plans include placing a flag pole in the middle of the town and putting up welcome signs.

"We all miss Sandra and we appreciate the gift in her memory and Calvin’s spirit of giving and keeping Sandra’s spirit alive," said club president Edwina Hart.

"Sandra and Calvin have both done so much for the town. I call on Calvin when my husband isn’t able to take care of something," noted Vice-president Rita Wilson, who along with husband Lloyd, also puts a great deal of effort into promoting Coffeeville.

"In human work God was sharing part of His responsibility to care for the world He has made. Labor is a normal part of the responsibility of God’s people and Sandra believed in keeping this world beautiful," Neal Houston, Guy’s sister added.
