Sports Scene
Did I really go 3-7? I have heard more than one person say, after the Auburn game with Tennessee, "Does anybody in the country have as much talent across the board as the Auburn Tigers?" Probably not, especially when you saw how they dismantled the Volunteers. It was a game most people, other than Auburn faithful, had already penciled in as a loss for the Tigers. But they came out with a great game plan. The only hiccup I saw was when they decided to change their plans and go to the air instead of the power running game that was working so well. In fact, if they had stayed with feeding the Vols a steady diet of Carnell Williams, Ronnie Brown and Trey Smith, the score never would have gotten as close as it did. And don’t forget Brandon Jacobs sitting on the bench. He may be the best back on the team and he didn’t even get a carry. This week Auburn travels to Fayetteville to play Arkansas. It’s a town the Tigers have a tough time playing in and the Hogs give them fits as well. Should Auburn figure out a way to win that game on the road then they have a legitimate shot at going to the SEC championship game. Moving across the state, Ala-bama had a tough time this past week in Athens. The Georgia Bulldogs looked like one of the best teams in the country. Alabama head coach made a rookie mistake Saturday as well. He took his number one quarterback, who had an injured shoulder, put him in the game and two plays later lost him after the injury was aggravated. Then later he lost his number two quarterback, Spencer Pennington, to a shoulder injury. Brodie Croyle should have never taken a snap in that game. At least not at the juncture of the game when he did. This week when Southern Miss rolls into town he will have the services of his number three quarterback who is completely healthy. Croyle and Pennington may be available but they need more rest for their injuries. Trust me when I say Southern Miss will be coming after either Croyle or Pennington should they get put in the game. The picking expert?!?! How in the world could I, the great and powerful sports editor of The Democrat, have a record of 3-7 this past week in our weekly pigskin picks panel? How indeed, some in my office would say. Could it be because that I ran my mouth a little too much about being in first place? Nah. Well....maybe....who kn-ows. Now I’m behind Candy in the overall record and I’m catching the devil because of it. That record knocked me from the top spot into a tie for second with two other prognosticators. I still stand behind the teams and picks I made last week. Even now I feel those teams had a valid shot at winning their games. Just bad luck. I can guarantee the next few weeks of games will be make ‘em or break ‘em for all of us. That’s all folks.........
