Turnovers, penalties costly for CCHS
Six turnovers and costly penalties led to 21 points as the Clarke County High School Bulldogs lost 35-12 to the Eagles of W.S. Neal this past Friday night in Grove Hill. The game marred by over 250 yards in penalties between the two squads. "We can not turn the ball over and hope to win," head coach Allan Floyd said. "We had too many penalties too. We got frustrated and that led to some of our penalties." CCHS jumped out to an early lead as they took the opening possession and drove 61 yards for the score. Quarterback Cardarriuos Dunagan hit Willie Horn with a 15-yard touchdown pass. The kick failed and with 9:35 left in the period CCHS led 6-0. Neal then took their possession and drove down to the Bulldog 21-yard line before turning it over on downs. Clarke County’s offense then drove back towards the Eagle goal line and had first-and-goal from the five. But a pair of penalties, including a personal foul, backed them up to the 22-yard line. Form there a field goal attempt was short and Neal retained possession. Neal capped the drive with an 8-yard scoring pass from tailback Alphonso Gross to quarterback Shaunathan Williams. B.J. Stabler and Horn combined to block the PAT and the game was tied 6-6 with 6:07 left in the opening stanza. The Bulldogs fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Neal set up shop at the CCHS 32-yard line. Three plays later Gross scored on a 5-yard run. Cory Freeman kicked the PAT and Neal led 13-6 with 5:03 left. The only offensive snap for CCHS in the remainder of the first half ended with an interception and the score stayed 13-6 at the break. Neal added to their lead on their opening drive of the third quarter with a 46-yard scoring pass from Williams to Marquis Barksdale. The kick failed but the Eagles held a 19-6 lead. Clarke County took the ball and started driving to Neal territory when an interception stopped the drive at the Eagle 27-yard line. Neal was unable to do anything and punted but on the first play for CCHS a fumble killed the drive at their own 20-yard line. Gross scored on the first play from 20-yards out. The added 2-point conversion gave the Eagles a 27-6 lead. After the kickoff the Bulldog offense fumbled on their first play to give Neal possession at the CCHS 35-yard line. Cory Burch capped the drive with a 21-yard run. Gross ran in the 2-point conversion as Neal took a 35-6 lead with 56 seconds left in the third quarter. In the last minute of the game CCHS scored their only other touchdown when Brandon White scored on a 7-yard run. The 2-point pass failed as Neal captured the region win 35-12. Horn led the CCHS offense with 95 yards on 12 carries. White added 66 yards on 11 carries and a score. Gross led all rushers with 219 yards on 29 carries and two TDs. "There were a lot of factors in this loss and they all point to me," Floyd added. "We are going to work on that and get better." This Friday the Bulldogs (2-4, 1-3) travel to Brundidge to take on the Bulldogs of Pike County (5-1, 4-0). The combined records of the four teams that have beaten CCHS is 16-2 this season. Pike enters the game ranked fourth in Class 3A. "If you can’t get fired up playing the number four team in the state then you need to get out of this business," he said. "We realize our opportunity to make the playoffs has been diminished but we are not going to quit." Game time is 7:30 p.m.
