Hospital golf tourney

The Grove Hill Memorial Hospital’s Golf Tournament that was supposed to be held Thursday, Sept. 30 has been postponed and will be held Thursday, Oct. 21 (today) at 1 p.m. at the Timbercreek Golf Course.

Foundation meeting

The Clarke County Develop-ment Foundation will hold its second annual meeting Thursday, Oct. 21 (today) in Thomasville. Weather permitting, the event will be outside in the renovated downtown area. Invitations to current members are being mailed. Anyone interested in joining the foundation that was created to promote economic development in the area, should call the chambers of commerce in Jackson, Grove Hill or Thomasville, or the foundation’s office in Grove Hill, 251-275-4254.

Retired teachers meet

The Clarke County Education Retirees Association will meet at Gloria’s Pour House Cafe, Thursday, Oct. 21 at 11:45 a.m. Sen. Hank Sanders will be the guest speaker. After giving a legislative update there will be a book singing. The book’s title is “Death of a Fat Man” and is based upon the story of an obese grandfather who gives advice to an obese granddaughter.s It compares the struggles of being obese to the struggles of life. All county officials are given an open invitation to attend.

GOP group to meet

The Tombigbee Republican Club members will meet for its pre-election strategy session on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Jackson Steakhouse. The statewide judgeship campaigns will be the topics for discussion, as will the possibility of strategic voting in the special vacancy election for Alabama House District 65. All Republicans from Clarke, Washington and Choctaw Counties are invited to attend.

McKinley reunion

There will be a McKinley family reunion Saturday, Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church. Bring a covered dish for lunch.

Brunson reunion

The descendants of Tom and Hessie Brunson will have a family reunion Saturday, Oct. 23 at Oak Grove Baptist Church in the Chilton community beginning at 10 a.m. Bring a covered lunch and lawn chairs.

‘Ghost Walk’ in T’ville

The Arts Council of Thomasville will present the first annual “Ghost Walk” on Saturday, Oct. 23 beginning at 6 p.m. at Clay Park in downtown Thomasville. Come out and enjoy a hayride to historic homes and businesses and hear tales of strange events and ghostly apparitions. Many stories will be taken from the “13 Ghosts” series compiled by Thomasville’s own Kathryn Tucker Windham. Ticket prices are $7.50 per family and $5 for an individual. Tours will be ending at 8:30 p.m. Concessions will be available and special “Ghost Walk” t-shirts will be available for purchase. Long sleeve t-shirts are $15 and short-sleeve shirts are $10. Let your children participate in the costume beginning at 6:30 p.m. Come out and bring the entire family for a fun and exciting evening celebrating the tradition of storytelling.

Thomas reunion

Relatives of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.R. (Billy) Thomas of Lower Peach Tree plan a family reunion on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the Community House in Jackson. Please bring a covered dish. All family members and friends are invited to attend.

VFW meeting

The VFW Post 5106 and its Ladies Auxiliary will have its regular monthly meeting Monday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. All members are urged to attend this important meeting.

Fire safety program

The Thomasville RSVP will present a program Monday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. on Fire Safety in conjunction with “Fire Safety” month. The Thomasville Fire Department will conduct the program. All area seniors are invited to come, as well as all local RSVP members. The meeting will be held in the Thomasville Nutrition Site dining hall.

Ivan timber meeting

Forest landowners looking for answers to questions on salvaging their timber, replanting lost trees and protecting the forestland from more damage due to Hurricane Ivan should attend a meeting Tuesday, Oct. 26 at the Clarke County High School Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. in Grove Hill.

It is sponsored by the Alabama Forest Recovery Task Force, the Alabama Forestry Association, the Alabama Forestry Commission, ALFA and the Alabama TREASURE Forest Association.

Halloween Carnival

The 2004 Clarke Prep School Halloween Carnival and Trick or Treat Trot for Arthritis will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 26 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the school’s football field. There will be inflatables, costume contest, country store, bingo, cakewalk and more. Concessions will be available. For more information contact the school office at 251-275-8576.

Halloween party

Ghosts, Goblins and Witches too will be out for Pineview Country Club’s Halloween Costume Party Saturday, Oct. 30 from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. The party is sponsored by the Thomasville Junior Women’s Club. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission will be $20 couple and $10 for singles. There will be cash prizes awarded for the best costumes! And a night of fun for each of you. Contact any club member for more information.

Society to meet

The Clarke County Historical Society will meet Sunday, Oct. 31 at 2:30 p.m. at the Grove Hill Town Hall. The guest speaker will be Tina Naremore Jones, an associate professor of English at the University of West Alabama. Her subject will be folklorist and writer, Ruby Pickens Tartt. Tartt is best known as a collector of African-American folksongs, field calls, and other folklore. She also assisted Carl Cramer in writing his classic, “Stars Fell On Alabama.” The public is invited to attend.

Citizen of year banquet

Virginia Harrigan will be honored as the Grove Hill Civitan Club’s Grove Hill Citizen of the Year Thursday, Nov. 4 with a banquet at the Grove Hill United Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Grove Hill Area Chamber of Commerce, the Clarke County Museum and at Chalk Chiropractic Clinic.

CHS ’49 reunion

The Coffeeville High School Class of 1949 will have its annual reunion at Ryan’s located on Highway 43 in Thomasville on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 5 p.m.

Rikard’s Mill event

Rikard’s Mill located between Monroeville and Camden on Highway 265, five miles north of Beatrice will be making cane syrup Saturday, Nov. 6 beginning at 9 a.m. The museum’s mule “Mac” will be grinding the sugar cane. Food will be available at the cabin. Admission is $5 and $3 for seniors and children. For more information contact 251-575-7433.

GH Christmas parade

The Grove Hill Christmas parade will be held Thursday, Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. This year’s theme for the parade will be “Christmas Through the Ages.” Anyone interested in entering a float or vehicle in the parade can contact the Chamber of Commerce. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the winning floats. Call the chamber for more information at 251-275-4188.
