Do not be swept away
By Rev. Billy Cardwell
Magnolia Assembly of God

  • This verse has always intrigued me: “If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compare with horses? If you stumble in safe country, how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?” Jer. 12:5 NIV

This is God speaking to Jeremiah, the prophet and telling him in two proverbs that soon he will have greater trials and sufferings.

Proverb #1: If you have run with footmen who wearied you, then how can you contend with horses? That is, if you are overcome and make bitter complaints because your countrymen show minor opposition to you, what will you do when the king, princes, priests and prophets inflict suffering upon you?

Proverb #2: If, in the land of peace where you have been secure and trust to have peace, men wearied you, then how will you get along in the swelling Jordan? That is, if in times of peace you have no peace, what will be your peace and security when war comes and the enemy sweeps over the land?

Dear Friend, we have no real problems now, yet we carry on as if the world was coming to an end for us. What are you going to do when you are faced with real opposition and no peace: The worst is yet to come and most of us can barely hold our head up now. What will you do in the future?

Get a grip on God-now-and don’t let go. The storm is about to break on our shores. A storm of political, social, economic and religious unrest.

Don’t be swept away with the rushing tide.
