Special race for House 65 seat is Tuesday

Voters in portions of Clarke County will go to the polls this coming Tuesday to vote on Democratic nominees to fill a vacant seat in the Alabama Legislature. Then they will go back the next Tuesday, Nov. 2, to vote in the general election.

The Oct. 26 special election is necessitated by the death of State Rep. Jeff Dolbare of cancer in August. Dolbare, D-Bigbee, represented District 65 which includes all of Washington County and parts of Clarke and Choctaw counties.

Voters will decide between three Democratic candidates.

Gloria Dolbare, Jeff Dolbare’s widow, is a teacher at Millry High School.

Wayne Lathan of Jackson was an unsuccessful candidate against Dolbare in 2002 and tried to run in 1998 but had to withdraw because his residence then was not in the district. He owns and operates funeral homes in Jackson, Chatom and Grove Hill.

David Johnson is also running. He lives in Jackson and works for Alabama Electric Cooperative in Leroy.

If a runoff is required, it will be held Dec. 14 with the winner facing Republican candidate Nick Williams of Washington County in a Jan. 25 general election. If no runoff is necessary, the general election will be held Dec. 14.

The winner will serve the balance of the term, which ends in January 2007. An election will be held in 2006.

Here are the Clarke County precincts that are in District 65. Please note the precincts that are split and make sure you are in the right box. Any questions can be directed to the Clarke County Board of Registrars or the Probate Judge’s or Circuit Clerk’s offices.
