CPS star pitcher hurt in 4-wheeler collision with truck
According to Hayles’ stepmother Susan Hayles, he was at The Truck Trails on County Road 17 between Robertsdale and Styx River when the accident occurred. He and another boy were racing on four-wheelers which had been modified to run in excess of 65 miles per hour. The two were on a dirt road leading to a hunting camp when Hayles hit a Nissan truck, driven by Johnathan Wirth of Summerdale, head-on. He was not wearing a helmet, and the state trooper working the accident told family members Hayles was running over 60 miles per hour when he collided with the truck. Someone in the area had seen Hayles leave and when he didn’t return went looking for him. When he came upon the wreck he called for help, LifeFlight was called to the scene and Hayles was transported to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Hayles underwent surgery to repair his femurs, which were both broken. he had a small hematoma on the back of his brain, but doctors do not suspect brain damage. He was unconscious for several days and on a ventilator to assist his breathing. On Tuesday he was responding to some commands and questions and the ventillator was removed. A passenger in the truck was also injured. Stethenny Lofthouse, 17, of Pensacola was also transported to Baptist Hospital. Hayles is the son of Mitch and Susan Hayles of Grove Hill and Janet Fleming of Robertsdale. Hayles was named All-State First tea, Pitcher by the Alabama Sportswriters Association and the Birmingham news.
