Clarke Prep Gators start playoff games
     The Clarke Prep School Gators baseball team closed the regular season falling 9-6 to Wilcox Academy, dampening the first ever night game at the team's ball field.

Throwing out the first pitch
     Longtime supporter John Becton threw out the first pitch last Friday as the Gators played their first night game on their home field. Here catcher Jake Turner catches the throw from Becton. The Gators fell 9-6, but still hosted Evangel Christian in substate playoff action.

Powell tapped as new LHS football coach
     The Washington County Board of Education announced last Thursday that Danny Powell would be taking over as head football coach and athletic director for the 2006-2007 school year.

Bagging the bird
     Delane Hicks, of Grove Hill, bagged this nice gobbler last Saturday while hunting "in Clarke County." The turkey weighed 17 pounds and had a 10 inch beard.

A chip off the old block
     Anna Hicks, 14, killed her first turkey gobbler Sunday morning, the last day of the spring season. She is the daughter of Winky Hicks, an avid turkey hunter and turkey caller maker who called the bird up for her. She shot the turkey with her father's old Model 12 and she readily acknowledged that it

Taking the limit
     Jimmie Grayson, of Jackson, killed this nice turkey last Friday while hunting in the Jackson area. The bird weighed 19 pounds, had a 9.5 inch beard and one inch spurs. The kill gave Grayson the five bird limit for the season.

Gators play under the lights
     Clarke Prep School played their first game under the lights at home this season against Wilcox Academy last Friday. The program has been raising money the last two seasons to help pay for the lights. See story on 6A for more on the game.
