What a yellow jacket nest!

Clarke-Washington Electric Cooperative meter reader Graham Wilson was startled when he rounded the corner of a vacant house in the Winn community and encountered this huge yellow jacket nest. The window and chimney gives some perspective to the nest. It is three to four feet wide, about four feet high and a foot or more thick. It was speculated that the hive probably extends into the walls and interior of the house since yellow jackets do not usually build their nests on exterior surfaces. The property belongs to Mildred and Johnnie Chapman. Luckily, there are no occupied residences nearby since the yellow jackets were buzzing about pretty fiercely. It is about a mile from Berry's Chapel Church. A lot of gigantic yellow jacket nests have been reported across Alabama and the south this year. See a story on Page 12B for more on the unusually large nests.
