Clarke school revenues estimated at $33.7 million The second hearing for the Clarke County School System's 2006-2007 budget was held Thursday, Aug. 3, during the Clarke County Board of Education meeting. Total incoming funds for the school year was estimated at $33,787,834. Total expenditures for the system was estimated at $33,577,957. Employees of the school system were given a five percent, or $1,000 pay raise, which ever amount was higher. Carmen Rotch, the system's custodian of funds also noted that in addition to funding the raises, there was the expense of higher retirement benefits and health insurance. Some teachers are also working an additional five days, for which they must be paid. Rotch also noted that about $600,000 had been lost in tax monies because Boise Cascade was not paying as much taxes. "We started preparing for all this last year, but we had to really work hard to find this money to make up the difference," she said. Board members approved the budget following the hearing.
Personnel Resignations were accepted from Amy Carlisle, a teacher at Grove Hill Elementary School and Jackie Napper, who is retiring from Gillmore Elementary School. New employees include Auburn Martin, a bus driver for the Jackson area; Brandi VanDee, a teacher at Grove Hill elementary School; Kim Tooks, a social studies teacher at Clarke County High School; Moneek Bryant, a special education teacher at Wilson Hall Middle School; and Tamika Robinson Turner, rehired as an aide at Clarke County High School. A second year leave of absence was granted for Kasey Fleming, the librarian at Jackson Intermediate School. Connie Outlaw will transfer from Gillmore Elementary School to Jackson Middle School.
Other business Superintendent Gerald Stephens said the concession stand, bathroom and ticket booth project at Legion-Simpkins Field in Jackson should be completed before the first football game. Some of the slab poured at Clarke County High School had to be pulled up because of plumbing leaks. The fine arts building at Jackson High School will be completed once a few punch list items have been finished. The new cafeteria at Jackson Middle School is expected to be finished in October. The new salary matrix for school system personnel was approved. The next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 31.
