Grand jury recommends trashing metal detector at courthouse's front door

The Clarke County Grand Jury met last week. After touring the courthouse several changes were suggested, one of which was eliminating the metal detector and security system at the front door.

Other recommendations include:

"A wall in the Board of Registrar's Office is in need of repair from water damage and new filters are needed for the air conditioning unit.

The committee does not feel that courthouse security measures are needed and recommends the metal detector be removed.

The restroom facilities in the basement and third floor of the courthouse are inadequate and should be made comparable to the restroom facilities on the main floor.

The wall in the break room of the District Attorney's Office is in need of repair.

The E-911 office is very small and the temperature is very hot. The Grand Jury recommends a more suitable location be provided for the E-911.

Inadequate space, inadequate temperature control and a lack of hot water are problems that exist throughout the courthouse."

County audits were examined and appeared to be in order. The offices of the courthouse, the books in those offices and the bonds of courthouse officials were all inspected and according to the grand jury report all were in order.

James Walker, custodian of the courthouse was commended for his job performance. Clarke County Commissioners were also commended for their upkeep of the courthouse.

The Clarke County Jail was also inspected and Sheriff Jack Day and staff were commended for the upkeep and maintenance of the jail.
