Capt. J. M. Hall in a letter datelined "Near Manassas, July 29, 1861," wrote "of the great battle [Editors note: Bull Run, or Manassas, was the first "real" battle of the Civil War]-and truly it was a great battle. Those at home who prate about Yankees not fighting should have witnessed that battle. Many of their regiment stood until we had literally cut them to pieces. They never gave up until we put the bayonet to them, then they could do as pretty running as any men you ever saw...Wash. Williams was the only man of my Company in the fight. He became separated from the regiment in our retreat from Far's Cross Roads, fell in with the 4th South Carolina Regiment, and fought from 8 o'clock until 4. He says one gets used to the whistle of bullets very soon. He fired 17 rounds and then supplied himself with cartridge from a dead Yankee's box...Many of the wounded Yankees lay two days in a cold rain and chilly air, before assistance could be rendered them. Their friends deserted them, and we had to provide for them."

"Dr. R. D. Neal, who was in charge of the County Health office, until the unit was discontinued because of a lack of funds, announces that he will open offices in Grove Hill for general practice."

A big revival, "what was said by many to be the most successful evangelistic meeting ever held in Grove Hill," recently concluded at the Grove Hill Baptist Church where the pastor, Rev. W. E. Lockler, had led the services. Services were held morning and evening with hundreds filling the sanctuary and Grove Hill businesses closing for the morning services. Forty-six joined the church, 25 by baptism.

Grove Hill was planning its first municipal water system, with assistance from the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which would contribute 30 percent of the price tag. A 120-foot, 150,000-gallon water tower was planned along with eight-inch mains in the business district and six-inch mains in nearly all residential areas along with 12 fire hydrants. The cost was $29,270.53. Editor George Carleton editorialized that the system was a bit more expensive than some but would also provide good fire protection without having to have a fire engine. The height of the water tower, he wrote, would offer "sufficient pressure to knock the shingles off a two-story house without the aid of auxiliary power."
