State senate hopeful visits
Charles Knowles, left, was the only person to show up at the Helwestern Fire Station Friday afternoon to greet John McMillan, Republican candidate for the District 22 seat in the State Senate, but Knowles told him what he thought anyway. He said he had promised himself he wasn't going to vote Republican again, after seeing Gov. Riley's and President Bush's performances in office, but said he might give McMillan a chance. Knowles said he wanted more oversight over county commissioners-especially Clarke County's. He said he wanted to see some dirt roads paved too. He said there hasn't been a road paved in his Clarke County Commission district in 16 years. Knowles, who lives on a dirt road, said he was told there was money for paving dirt roads in Montgomery. McMillan didn't directly respond to Knowles' comments. He did say that he had good turnout at some of his stops around rural Clarke County over his two-day tour. He said he would be back in the county before the Nov. 7 general election. McMillan is a retired executive director of the Alabama Forestry Association. He is running against State Sen. Pat Lindsey, D-Butler, who has held the position for several terms.
