Daniel Paul going to Japan for college Daniel Paul is packing this week for what will be a 10-month adventure. He is going to Japan where he will be a foreign exchange student through June of next year. Paul, a sophomore at the University of Alabama, is one of five students from UA going to Japan on a scholarship program. He will be living in Hirakata City, a 400,000 suburb of Osaka. He will be going to college, attending Kansai Gaidai University. Paul said that translates into "Foreign Language University." Paul, a 4.0 student at UA, has been taking foreign languages and said he especially like Japanese. He has also met some Japanese exchange students and said he is intrigued by the country's people and culture. Paul will be living in a college dormitory for the first part of his stay and then he will move in with a Japanese family. He admitted that is the part that is a bit scary but he agreed that it is also where he will likely learn the most about the people and the country. He isn't sure what his major will be but said he wants it to be something where he can use his love of languages. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Devane Paul of Grove Hill. His father said he wasn't especially fond of his son living on the other side of the world for nearly a year but admitted that it is a chance of a lifetime that he should take. The two Pauls said they plan to communicate mostly by e-mail and through a voice communication program over the Internet to avoid high priced telephone calls.
