New RV park will be good for Jackson, say councilmen

Jackson Councilman Paul South reported at Tuesday's council meeting that the new RV park located on Highway 177 would open Monday, Aug. 28, and is equipped with water service for campers. "I believe this will be a great asset for our town," he said.

"I would like to echo what Councilman South said about the RV park," said Councilman Anthony Jackson during his comments to the council. "I believe this will be a great marketing tool for the city."

ACE draws good comments

Council members conveyed positive feedback about the Alabama Communities of Excellence (ACE) meetings conducted in Jackson Monday and Tuesday.

The meetings involved members of the community and a team of professionals representing ACE and included a tour of the community and a meeting with Jackson citizens concerning an improvement process that includes an assessment by the team.

During Tuesday's city council meeting, Mayor Richard Long said after reviewing the assessment, the city will have the option to continue with the program. "I feel very positive about what transpired during the meetings held yesterday and today," he added.

So far, 18 cities across the state have been chosen to participate in the statewide program.

"We need to keep this energy and momentum going," said Councilman Daron Bolen. "We should be proud that Jackson was chosen to participate in this program."

Paving contract approved

The council approved to accept the low bid of $789,705 from Southwest Alabama Construction (SAC) of Jackson for the city's paving project. They also approved a resolution for additional paving at Pearce Park to be added to the bid specifications for the project. The only other bid received was from Asphalt Supply Company of Thomasville for $803,817.50.

In addition, SAC was also awarded the bid, in the amount of $28,830, to replace culverts in various locations where the resurfacing would be taking place.

In other business:

+ Councilman Bolen gave the zoning commission's report stating that they had reported Bargain Motors was not in violation of the zoning ordinance with its storage of vehicles on Forest Avenue. He said a home-based hair salon on Forest Avenue had also been approved.

+ Councilman Eldridge Jackson Jr. said Jackson Intermediate School's test scores from the last school term showed a majority of the students' scores improved. He said the Continuing School Initiative (CSI) program, which Donald oversees, was seen as the chief contributor to the improved test scores.

+ The council approved a COLA increase for retired city employees, which would mean an increase of $1,317 in cost to the city each month.

+ Long announced that a work session would be scheduled for sometime in September for the purpose of working on the city's budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

+ William Cannon, owner of Boom City Cafe, inquired about having the final inspections done on a building downtown where he intends to open a second restaurant. A liquor license was approved for the new business earlier this year, but Cannon said he had had trouble obtaining the final inspection of the building by the fire department and getting the license. Mayor Long assured him the matter would be settled this week.

+ Long reported that the final inspection on the new concession stand/restroom/ticket booth complex at Legion Field would be conducted Monday, Aug. 28, and would be ready for the first ballgame between Jackson and Leroy High Schools.
