Babes have come long way
New coach Athena Hubbert, who played collegiately at Mississippi University for Women, has seen her team turn things around from the first few days of work. "These girls have shown one of the strongest work ethics I have ever seen," Hubbert said. "Everything has totally leveled out since day one." Since Hubbert is new to the team, she does not consider anyone as a returning starter. "Everyone is having to earn a starting position," she said. She is looking at eight different girls to take the starting six positions, meaning there will be depth on the bench. "I have a good group of players with experience and it looks like there will be some depth too." Carrie Gordon, Menetre Martin, Jessica Johnson, Jasmine Morris, Schaefer Bradford, Nikki Williams, Hannah Barnes and Celeste Martin are all looking at a lot of playing time, depending on the starting line up. "I am still not certain who will be in the starting line-up," she added. "If we use a libro player (a defensive specialist who can substitute an unlimited number of times) then Krista "Nicki" Harvell may be that person. Or Schaefer (Bradford)." Hubbert also sees the schedule allowing for the advancement of younger players getting some experience and playing time." Halie Moore, Abbey Walker, Chelsey Morris and Dylan Walker are seventh and eight graders who have shown some promise for the future. "I feel like the younger girls will get to play some, looking at the schedule we have," she said. "But all of the girls have come a long way since we started. The rest of the Babe volleyball squad is made up of Keandra Smith, Ionna Davis, Alex Jones, Nicole Mobley, Savannah Mozingo, Morgan Paul and Tiera Johnson. CCHS opens the season next Tuesday in Chatom when they take on Washington County and Fruitdale in a tri-match. The volleyball team will be selling slide on sandals with Bulldogs across the front as a way to raise funds. The shoes will be $20 and can be purchased from any of the volleyball players.
