Belshazzar attitude is dangerous
By Rev. Billy Cardwell
Magnolia Assembly
of God Church

In Daniel 5:1 it reads, "Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand."

Daniel 5:30-31 reads like this, "That night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain. And Darius the Median took the kingdom... (the kingdom of Babylon)." Darius, king of the Medes and Persians had surrounded the kingdom of Babylon and besieged it for weeks, maybe months. In this atmoshere, Belshazzar throws a party. That very night the city of Babylon is captured and Belshazzar is slain. The Belshazzar Spirit is a party attitude on the verge of disaster.

All America seems to want to do is "party" in one form or another. We live all week for the weekend so that we can do our "thing." Yet, we have the Afghan-Iraq war facing us.... possible nuclear power in Iran (old Persia in the Bible), high gas prices possibly can wreck our economy, terrorists everywhere, deep-rooted trouble in Israel and the Middle East, hurricanes, earthquakes, just to name a few problems facing us.

What are we doing? Partying! The word "party," in Webster's dictionary, is to take part in social activity, as at a party, in an unrestrained, often boisterous manner, usually while drinking alcoholic beverages, taking drugs, etc. The Belshazzar Spirit is alive and well in America-a party attitude on the verge of disaster.

Will we ever learn? What were Noah and Lot's generation doing when the flood came and the fire from heaven fell and destroyed them all?

Read Luke 17:26-30. Jesus does not mention the sin of Noah's day, nor Lot's day .... but a busy party atmosphere where God was not present nor welcomed. Both generations were having a great time on the verge of destruction.

I Peter 1:13, "Gird up the loins of your mind, be sober." The word "sober" is characterized by reason, sanity, self-control, showing mental and emotional balance. What we need today among all of our people is a little "common sense" and a heart for the things of God.

Is that asking too much?
