Grants awarded for road safety
Gov. Bob Riley has awarded $70,501 to remove dangerous drivers from the roads and improve traffic safety in six southwest Alabama counties. A $52,874 grant will be used to continue public awareness and other safety campaigns. A $17,627 grant will help fund special traffic enforcement details. The grants are all an effort to make roads safer in Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Monroe, Washington and Wilcox counties. "Most Alabama drivers obey our traffic laws and are mindful of the rights of others," Riley said. "Because the few who break the law endanger everyone, we all must take precautions and we must ensure that violators pay the penalty for their behavior." Funds will be used by the Southwest Alabama High Safety Office to conduct safety programs in schools and communities and improve emergency medical services throughout the coverage area. Other funds will enable law enforcement agencies to conduct traffic safety checkpoints and increase patrols to reduce speeding, drunken driving and other unsafe driving infractions. Riley notified John Clyde Riggs, executive director of the Alabama Tombigbee Regional Commission that the grants had been approved. The grants are being administered by the Law Enforcement and Traffic Safety Division of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. Funds were available to the state through a program of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
