Book Club starts new season

The members of the Grove Hill Book Club read Homer Hickam's book.
The Grove Hill Arts Council in conjunction with the Thomasville Arts Council is ready to launch the 2006 Community Book Read. This year's selection is "Rocket Boys" by Alabama resident Homer Hickam. The memoir chronicles the young Hickam's dream of someday sending rockets into space. As the son of a coal miner in the hills of West Virginia, Homer was inspired by the Russian's 1957 satellite Sputnik to build and launch his own rockets. He and his oddball friends form the Big Creek Missile Agency and their explosive adventures begin.

The two arts councils encourage all Clarke County residents to read "Rocket Boys," which was adapted to film and renamed October Sky. The public is invited to a screening of this film on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m. at the Grove Hill United Methodist Church. The Grove Hill Community Study will host a community discussion of the memoir on Oct. 17 at the Grove Hill Town Hall. Two other events are still in the planning stages. One is a dance much like the ones attended by Hickam and his buddies in the late 50's. This dance with music provided by the Moon Dogs will be held in Thomasville on Saturday, Sept. 30. In addition to these exciting activities, a model rocket launching workshop will be held for children of all ages on a Saturday morning TBA.

Copies of the books will be distributed to all the county public libraries as well as to the members of the Grove Hill Community Study Club. Anyone having trouble locating a copy could also contact members of the Grove Hill Book Club. The book club read "Rocket Boys" and discussed it at their August meeting.

For more information, interested persons can contact Annell Gordon at 251-275-3353 or Amy Davis at 251-275-4300. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one! Blast off with Homer Hickam's "Rocket Boys!"
