Counselman gets masters at Penn State
Counselman's graduate studies are funded through a teaching assistantship that pays his tuition, fees and grants him a monthly stipend in exchange for his teaching two Spanish classes each semester. He also taught an intensive six week summer session of Spanish at Penn State this summer. His experience teaching was preceded by experience as a tutor of Spanish and French for the department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at USA. Upon completion of the Ph.D., Counselman intends to work as a professor of Spanish and Linguistics with the added ability to teach introductory courses in French or other Romance languages. He also aspires to become involved in translation with the hope of gaining enough professional experience to manage a small business in freelance translation. Counselman's knowledge of foreign languages began with his taking Spanish at Jackson High School, from which he graduated in 2000, and continued with his majoring in both Spanish and French at the University of South Alabama, from which he graduated cum laude in 2003. Throughout his undergraduate career, he improved his command of Spanish and French by spending summers in Xalapa, Mexico; Caracas, Venezuela; and Dijon, France. He also took three semesters of German at USA, and has some degree of non-native fluency in Italian and Portuguese, due to studying these on his own.
