Natural gas leak stops Labor Day traffic on 43

A natural gas leak in the Kelley Flat area brought Labor Day traffic on Highway 43 to a standstill temporarily late Monday afternoon.

A man was bushhogging next to the Kelley Flat store and hit a Clarke-Mobile Counties Gas District line that was hidden by the tall grass. The high pressured line sent gas fumes into the air that could be smelled a distance from the scene.

Area fire departments and lawmen responded to the scene and residents in the immediate area were evacuated.

Traffic on Highway 43 was initially diverted to the lanes fartherest away from the break-the northbound lanes-and then were stopped for a while. Traffic quickly backed up in both directions.

Clarke-Mobile repairmen arrived promptly and quickly repaired the leak.

It was not a threatening situation-but it may have taken firemen, repairmen, lawmen and others away from any Labor Day afternoon barbecuing they were doing!
