MHS Panthers take sting out of Essex Hornet's The Scottie Jones era as the head coach at Marengo High School started off with a bang this past Friday night as the Panthers beat John Essex 20-8 in Demopolis. "The kids played very hard," Jones said. "Defensively, coach Pritchett had a good game plan and it helped us stay in the game when it was close early on." Donte Packer put the Panthers on the scoreboard in the first half on a 2-yard run. Keldred Bouler ran in the 2-point conversion to give Marengo an 8-0 lead. That lead held up through the rest of the first half. In the second half Marengo added to that lead and K. Bouler plowed through the line for an 18-yard scoring romp. The attempt failed, but the Panthers increased their lead to 14-0. John Essex responded with a 2-yard touchdown pass and a 2-point conversion to cut into the lead 14-8. Marengo put it out of reach when Ronnie Hildreth scored on a 7-yard jaunt. Again the attempt was no good but the Panthers held a 20-8 lead late in the fourth quarter. From there Marengo's defense rose to the occasion and kept the Hornets from hitting paydirt again, preserving the 20-8, season-opening win. K. Bouler led all rushers with 115 yards on 12 carries and a score. R. Hildreth added 108 yards on 15 carries and a score. Donald Brown had 67 yards on 10 carries. Packer had nine yards on four carries and a score. "They took away the outside...the sweeps," Jones said. "So we ran inside with some success." The Panther defense was led by Quintin Bouler who had seven stops, including three QB sacks. P.J. Brown added six stops. Hakeem Hildreth had four tackles and a fumble recovery. Onterio Woods had five stops, a fumble recovery and a QB sack. Quintin Watkins had a fumble recovery. "With that game behind us it is time to get ready for Coffeeville," Jones said. "Hopefully we can play better this week and that is all you can ask from these guys." Marengo (1-0, 0-0) hosts Coffeeville (0-1, 0-0) this Friday night at The Swamp. Coffeeville lost 58-6 last week. Game time is 7 p.m.
