A big surprise party in Thomasville fetes Chance's Marie Marshall
Gail Marshall

Chance resident Marie Marshall was surprised with a birthday party at Ryan's in Thomasville this past Saturday.

Her daughter, Melisa Washington played host to a group of family and friends who gathered to celebrate Marie's birthday. They had a difficult time trying to keep it from her as she couldn't understand why individuals kept asking her to take them various places instead of her just going into Ryan's to eat, as she and her mom had planned.

Unbeknown to her, the group was not quite finished with decorations and other details, so they tried to keep her out until they were completed. After the initial shock wore off, everyone settled down to an enjoyable meal and birthday cakes. One relative who traveled from Mobile to surprise Marie, Lewis Carlton, kept everyone entertained with his teasing Marie and others. Marie states that she thoroughly enjoyed herself and felt the love of family and friends who thought so much of her.

St. John Church of Lower Peach Tree continues in revival services this week. Rev. Floyd O. Bell of Linden is the minister for the week. Services begin each night at 7:15 p.m. Rev. Jessie Smith is the pastor.

Chance Baptist Church observed their annual church anniversary this past Sunday. Rev. Tommie Jackson, pastor of Miles Chapel C.M.E. Church of the Packers Bend community was the guest speaker. Chance Baptist was observing their 46th year anniversary.

Several of the founding members were present, Mrs. Maxie Taite, Mrs. Annie Lee Welch, Mrs. Retha Marshall and Mr. Andy Welch Jr. The church secretary, Ms. Esther Kidd, read a brief history of the church. Everyone enjoyed the sermon by Rev. Jackson and look forward to him and his church visiting again soon. Rev. C.L. Marshall is the pastor.
