Our Opinions
Beautify Grove Hill but keep it practical

The downtown Grove Hill area could certainly stand some beautifying and some revitalization. Few deny that. But how to do it opens up a debate.

A streetscape plan for retooling Main Street from Town Hall to the County Courthouse is pictured elsewhere in today's paper.

It is a rich plan-brick sidewalks, lots of grassy green spaces and lots of trees and shrubs. We do not doubt that it would be pretty if it could be done.

Pretty though it may be, we must remember that downtown Grove Hill is (despite some who may say otherwise) a working town. The plan proposed takes away too much parking, makes vehicle navigation more difficult and is not considerate enough of business and county government needs.

The tree and shrub-heavy streetscape also looks like it would be difficult to maintain. Grove Hill can't or won't keep up a few planter boxes scattered around town. What would this streetscape look like with little or no maintenance?

The plan is pretty but simply not practical, functionable or manageable.

A scaled-back plan, with some greenery and some brickwork but without sacrificing so much parking-including all of the center Main Street parking-would work much better and also be easier to sell to businesses and traditionalists.

A meeting at the Grove Hill Town Hall is tonight (Thursday) to get public input on the plan. We urge citizens to attend and voice their opinions, pro or con. It starts at 6:30.
