Grove Hillian charged with Katrina FEMA fraud

The mother of a Clarke County woman already charged with allegedly defrauding the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has also been charged with similar crimes.

According to an article in Wednesday's Mobile Register, Hanna Williams of Grove Hill has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges that she filed a false claim and two counts each of mail and wire fraud.

Williams' daughter, Lawanda Williams of Jackson, is accused of using different names and addresses to cash FEMA checks she allegedly fraudulently obtained from the federal agency following Hurricane Katrina, which hit the Gulf Coast Aug. 29 of last year.

The elder Williams has been charged with falsely claiming that her home on King Institute Way in Grove Hill was flooded and damaged by a sewage backup in the home. She, like her daughter claimed her home was damaged by the storm.

According to the Register's article, Williams applied for aid from FEMA and received $22,904, according to the indictment. She allegedly received checks in September and October of last year and direct deposits into her bank account in January and May of this year.
