Commissioners table decision on solid waste Clarke County Commissioners voted to table their decision on which company would provide solid waste removal for county residents until the next commission meeting. Proposals for solid waste removal were opened Tuesday. Bids were received from Allied Waste Services, the company which currently serves the county, and Arrow Waster. Both companies were asked to submit bids for the cost of solid waste pick-up, without the company having an office in the county, and an alternate bid for the cost of pick-up, with the company providing an office in the county. Allied's bid was for $10.84 a month per customer, without carts provided. Arrow's bid was $14.08 a month per customer, with carts provided and $12.58 a month without carts provided. Both companies said the bid price would not change if an office was provided. Clarke County Utilities Director Jack Greer asked that the decision be tabled until the next meeting so he could thoroughly research the bids.
LP report Commissioner Patricia DuBose reported she had spoken with officials at Louisiana Pacific when she visited the site and was told that there were concerns about the schedule delays but they were not dissatisfied. Plant manager Steve Doffitt was quoted as saying, "We will make it work. Due to LP's investment, we are 100 percent committed to the completion of this project." He also told her he expected the first OSB board to come off the line Sept. 28. 2007.
Road and bridge Commissioners endorsed a contract extension with NRCS to complete erosion control projects in the county. The projects are being funded through NRCS and were supposed to be completed by Sept. 30, but the deadline has been extended until Nov. 30. Five of the county's used dump trucks were sold at auction last month, bringing an average of $97,660 each. The remaining five were taken to Philadelphia, Miss. where they will be auctioned off this week. The county has taken delivery of the new dump trucks. The brush cutter has been taken to Mobile to have a new cutter device installed and County Engineer Sam Noble reported the second round of bush-hogging had begun in the county.
Other business Bumpers Oil of Jackson was awarded the bid for gas and fuel for the county. Their bid for high test premium gas was $1.8945 per gallon and their bid for on-road diesel was $1.9285 per gallon. Rush Contracting of Thomasville was awarded the bid for pipe and culverts. Bidders were supplied with a price list and Rush offered a 50 percent discount off the list price. A resolution supporting the Twin Rivers Economic Development Partnership was approved. The decision on whether to issue a cost of living increase for retirees was tabled until the next meeting. Commissioners voted in favor of moving the Walker Springs polling place from St. Luke's Church back to D & K Grocery, formerly Overstreet's Grocery. The contract to employee Alabama Correction Industries for the renovations to the old jail for the new E-911 center was approved. It was reported that the concrete footing was being poured for a communications tower in Coffeeville by Southern Linc and it is expected to be operational by the end of October.
