The Clarke Prep School Gators used big plays at the right time to run past the Volunteers of Monroe Academy 32-12 last Friday night at Billy Hamilton Field in Grove Hill.

Just prior to the opening kickoff the field was named in honor of current head coach Billy Hamilton and his 21 years of service to the school. In that time he has coached the school to 175 wins and five state crowns.

Early in the game the Gators drove down to the Vol 7-yard line before a fumble ended the potential scoring drive.

But in the second quarter it was the Clarke Prep defense that stepped up as they forced Monroe Academy to turn the ball over on downs at the Gator 10-yard line.

From there it took just two plays for CPS to hit paydirt as Wesley Morgan went 22-yards on the play and then 68 on the next for the touchdown. The try for two was short but the Gators led 6-0 with 6:43 left in the second quarter.

Monroe Academy countered with an eight play, 62-yard scoring drive that ended with a 29-yard scoring strike from Thomas Williams to Alex Dueitt. The kick failed, leaving the score knotted at 6-6 with 4:32 left in the opening half.

That would be the way the score remained as the first half came to an end.

The Gator offense came out firing on all cylinders to start the third quarter as they moved the ball 75-yards in three plays with quarterback Chad Dickinson calling his own number on a 69-yard scramble around left end. Again the try for two came up short, but Clarke Prep held a 12-6 lead with 10:23 left in the third quarter.

Midway through the period the Gator's special teams came up big as Taylor Becton gathered in a Volunteer punt at his own 40-yard line and raced through the pack 60-yards for the touchdown. The try for two again came up short, but Clarke Prep increased their lead to 18-6 with 5:20 left in the period.

Now the defense increased their play once again as Clay Furrow recovered a Monroe punt near midfield, giving the Gators the ball again.

Five plays into the drive Dickinson again broke free, this time on a 23-yard jaunt. The conversion attempt was no good, making it 24-6 with 2:11 left in the third.

The Gators added to their lead early in the fourth when Morgan scored on a 4-yard blast. Furrow ran in the 2-point conversion, making it 32-6 with 9:44 left to play.

Monroe added a late score when Williams hit Chase Luker with a 41-yard TD pass. Mason Baggett blocked the PAT, making it 32-12 with 7:21 left in the game.

Neither team made a serious threat again in the contest and the game ended with the Gators on top 32-12.

Morgan led all rushers with 144 yards on 16 carries and a pair of TDs. Dickinson had 105 yards on eight carries and two scores. Brett Bradford added 66 yards on 12 carries. Furrow had 42 yards on four totes.

Dickinson was also 3-of-6 passing for 76 yards.

The Gator defense limited the Volunteers to just 61 yards on the ground and 198 yards in the air.

Taylor Becton paced the defense with nine solo stops and two assists.

The Gators (2-1, 1-1) remain at home this week as they host the Fort Dale Eagles in a big region game. Fort Dale (2-1, 1-1) lost 47-0 last week to Faith Academy.

Game time at Hamilton Field is 7:30 p.m.
