Bulldogs make most of opportunity
Taking just three plays on their first drive, the Bulldog rushing attack powered through the Tigers as fullback Kenneth Kimbrough broke free for a 33-yard TD run. Jerome Ivory kicked the PAT to give CCHS a 7-0 lead. The Calhoun Tiger offense responded with a 27-yard touchdown pass. The try for two was no good and the Bulldogs held a 7-6 lead with 8:16 left in the first quarter.
Clarke County answered with another scoring drive. Staying exclusively on the ground Jamarcus Robinson capped the drive with a 2-yard drive. Ivory again converted the point-after touchdown, increasing the CCHS lead to 14-6 with 5:54 left in the first stanza. Late in the second quarter Clarke County's Marquentrell Lambert blocked a Calhoun punt, setting the table for the Bulldog offense at the 24-yard line. On the first play Kimbrough blasted through, covering the distance for the score. The attempt failed as CCHS took a 20-6 lead with 4:41 left in the first half. The CCHS defense gave the ball back to the offense two plays later when Duane Owens stepped in front of a Tiger pass near midfield. J. Robinson ended the drive with a 6-yard run. Terrance Frazier ran in the 2-point conversion and the Bulldog lead increased to 28-6 as the first half ended. In the second half the Bulldogs Jerome Council intercepted a Tiger pass, ending a drive at the CCHS 34-yard line. From there the Bulldogs started driving. On the first play quarterback Tyler Walker hit J. Robinson with a 23-yard gain. And then four straight running plays moved the ball to paydirt as Robinson scored on a 4-yard run. Ivory's kick was good and CCHS had a 35-6 stranglehold with 5:43 left in the third period. The opportunistic Bulldog defense again flexed its muscles as Lambert recovered a Calhoun fumble on the CCHS 19-yard line, once again snuffing out a potential scoring opportunity. In the fourth quarter another Calhoun turnover led to CCHS points as the loose pigskin was recovered at the Tiger 27-yard line. Torri Taite capped the short drive with a 1-yard plunge. Ivory again converted the PAT and the Bulldogs had a 41-6 lead with 9:31 left to play. Calhoun was not ready to give up as they connected with a 88-yard touchdown pass and run to cut the lead 41-12 with 6:48 left in the game.
Clarke County had one more opportunity to score but Ivory's 31-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right and the game ended with the Bulldogs winning 41-12. Kimbrough led all rushers 167 yards on 12 carries. Robinson added 64 yards on 12 carries. Kedarius Allen had 74 yards on 10 carries. Taite added 25 yards on four carries. Frazier had 39 yards on three carries. The Bulldog offense rolled to 406 yards in total offense while the defense created six turnovers and limited Calhoun to 70 yards on the ground and 170 yards in the air. This Friday the Bulldogs (1-1, 1-0) stay in region play as they host the Leopards of Mobile Christian (1-1, 0-1). Mobile Christian lost 26-3 last Friday night to Washington County. Game time at H.G. Prim Stadium is 7 p.m.
