The Sweet Water Bulldogs accumulated 609 yards of total offense this past Friday, Sept. 8 on their way to a sound defeat of the Akron Rams. Of that yardage total, 508 came from the Bulldogs' vaunted running game with 101 coming via the airways.

Playing before the home fans at Nolan Atkins Stadium the Bulldogs kept their supporters on their feet through most of the first half as they registered 47 of their 60 points in the first two quarters and then coasted to the 60-6 final.

With Anthony Landrum, one of the Bulldogs' most prolific rushers, being held out of the game because of an injury, freshman Johnny Lockett stepped in to take up the slack and led the Bulldogs rushing attack with 219 yards and two touchdowns on five carries. He was followed closely by Dominic Holt with 200 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries.

In the air Sweet Water signal caller Drew Luker was 6 for 19 for 88 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Leading the receiving for the Bulldogs were;

Demaraquis Williams with two catches for 23 yards and Travis Young also with two catches for 23 yards and one touchdown.

On defense the Bulldogs, who held the Rams to 160 total yards of offense, were led by Jacques Lockett with eight tackles and two sacks. He was followed by Drew Luker and Scottie Nelson with five tackles each.

The game itself started off with a bang as Johnny Lockett raced 78 yards for a Sweet Water touchdown with 11:14 remaining in the first quarter. The extra-point try missed the mark and the Bulldogs led 6-0. The Bulldogs scored their second touchdown of the evening at the 3:38 mark of the first quarter when Dominic Holt lumbered 53 yards to pay dirt. This time Ty Glass was on target with the extra-point and the Sweet Water lead stood at 13-0. With a quick turnaround Sweet Water was on the board again before the period ended with Holt recording his second touchdown on a 30-yard rumble. Once more the extra-point was no good leaving the score at 19-0.

Lockett was off and running again early in the second quarter, much like he was early in the first, putting his second touchdown in the books on a 47 yard scamper. Glass kicked the extra-point try making the score 26-0 with 10:45 left in the second quarter.

Drew Luker was the next Bulldog to get in the scoring act as he darted in from 8 yards out with 7:06 remaining in the second quarter to increase the Sweet Water lead to 33-0 following Glass' third extra-point.

The Rams finally put some points on the board in their next possession when they completed a 20-yard pass for a touchdown. A two-point conversion attempt failed but the lead had been cut to 33-6 with 5:20 left in the second period.

It didn't take the Bulldogs long to answer the score as Dominic Holt rambled 44 yards for yet another Sweet Water touchdown with 4:35 left in the second period. Glass split the uprights and the Bulldogs led 40-6

The Bulldogs weren't done with the first half rampage and tacked one more on for good measure as Drew Luker connected with Travis Young on a 15 yard scoring strike with 1:25 remaining before intermission. Glass was on the mark with the extra-point and the Bulldogs took a 47-6 lead into the locker room.

Even though Coach Luker substituted freely in the second half the Bulldogs did manage to score two more times, once in the third quarter and once in the fourth. Demaraquis Williams recorded both scores getting his first touchdown with 6:05 remaining in the third quarter on a five yard run and his second with 6:32 left in the final stanza on a 76 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. Glass was one for two on his last two attempts making the final score 60-6.

Up next for the 1-1 Bulldogs is the Sunshine Tigers.

Friday's game with Sunshine will serve as the Bulldogs' 2006 Homecoming with kickoff set for 7 p.m. at Nolan Atkins Stadium.
