Grove Hill increases garbage, sewerage rates
Special meet Sept. 26 on revitalization project
By Kathryn F. Pickard

Grove Hill residents will be paying more for garbage pick-up and higher sewerage rates.

The increases were approved during Monday's Grove Hill Town Council meeting.

According to Mayor Lamar Hudson, the town had not passed on a rate increase in January for garbage pick-up to residents. The pick-up was actually $11.48 per month, but customers were paying $11.09 per month.

The rates have increased again with the renewal of the solid waste removal contract with Allied Waste. Residential customers will be paying $13.32 per month and commercial customers will see a 12 percent rate increase.

Hudson told council members that there had been no sewage rate increases since 1997 and the town had been absorbing about $50,000 a year in extra costs. "We can't continue to do that," he said. The new sewerage rate is $10 a month plus $2 for every 1,000 gallons of water usage.

Town council members approved the National Incident Management System resolution that all emergency personnel would use common language, instead of using codes, when communicating during a disaster.

A special town council meeting will be held to discuss revitalization efforts Tuesday, Sept. 26.

The approval of the 2006-2007 budget was tabled until the Sept. 26 meeting.

Council members agreed to let the town take over the payroll responsibilities for the Library Board.

Clarke County EMA Director Roy Waite informed town council members that Sept. 24 is Be Ready Sunday. Local churches are being asked to encourage congregations to be prepared in case of a disaster.
