Candidates, public invited to political forum Oct. 10

The Alabama New South Coalition and the Tombigbee Republican Club are sponsoring a political forum for candidates on the Nov. 7 general election ballot. The event will be at the McCorquodale Auditorium, Jackson High School, on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m.

A news release states, "Candidates will not be charged a fee and this is not a fundraiser. The occasion is a community service for the voters of Clarke, Washington and Choctaw counties and the surrounding area."

Registration for candidates starts at 5:30 p.m. "Incumbents will have the privilege of speaking first or last as long as their arrival is timely. Open seats will speak with the preference given to the first to register." Later the release adds, "All speakers will be allowed equal time to be determined."

The release continues, "We have asked Circuit Judge-Elect Stuart C. DuBose, to serve as moderator for this special event. If you have any questions, you may contact him at his office at 251-246-4275 or at his home at night at 251-246-2934."

Security will be provided by the Jackson Police Department, the Clarke County Sheriff's Department "and any other agencies willing to participate."

The release is signed by Henry Smiley, chairman of the local New South Coalition Chapter and Jamie Wilkins, chairman of the Tombigbee Republican Club.

Co-sponsors were listed as the Clarke County Alabama Democratic Conference, the Clarke County Democratic Executive Committee and the Clarke County Republican Executive Committee "with substantial significant others expected to join."
