Legislator's check bounces

A couple of weeks ago State Rep. Nick Williams, R-Sims Chapel, was at the Grove Hill Public Library to present a $1,466.66 check from last year's legislative discretionary funds. Librarian Betsy West was all smiles as she posed for a photograph requested by Williams receiving the funds. The photo ran in last week's paper. The smiles faded, however, when the check bounced. The explanation was that last year's discretionary funds were held too long. Legislators like to make such check presentations in an election year and Williams may have waited a bit too close to the Nov. 7 election to present this one. Gov. Riley had filed suit to stop discretionary expenditures by the Legislature but a judge ruled Tuesday that he will likely uphold their constitutionality.
