Wilcox forestry tour is Sept. 26
By John P. Ollison
Regional Extension Agent

As a forest landowner you may have wondered from time to time if you and your woods could benefit from a timber harvest. It may be that the woodlands are getting crowded or the habitat is no longer ideal for the deer you hunt or the songbirds you love to watch.

The Wilcox County Treasure Forest Chapter will conduct a Fall Forestry Tour on "Harvesting Methods Applicable for Non-Industrial Private Forestlands."

The tour will be held Tuesday, Sept. 26 on the Shannon Hollinger family property. Tour stops will include:

1. Riparian Buffer Zone/Hardwood and Pine Planting.

2. Conventional Logging Crew/Final Harvest/BMP's.

3. Cut to Length Logging Crew/12 year old Pine Plantation Thinning.

4. Chambers Delimber/Natural Pine Stand/Select Marked Thinning.

5. Sivo pasture.

We will meet at Lawler Timber Company, Highway 265, just south of Camden at 8 a.m. the morning of the 26th and leave at 8:30 a.m. traveling to the first tour stop. We will travel back to Lawler Timber Company at noon for lunch.

There is no cost to attend this tour; however, you must call to register. Please call the Wilcox County Extension office at 334-682-4289.

Please register before the deadline of 4:30 p.m., Sept. 22 so we can complete the plans for the meal. Mark your calendar now and plan to attend this informative tour.
