New York museum contributes to local museum's storm repairs
The Clarke County Museum sustained roof damage to several structures following Hurricanes Ivan, Dennis and Katrina that struck this area in 2004 and 2005. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the American Museum Association conducted a survey of museums in the Gulf Coast and included in their survey that Clarke County's museum had sustained damage to several of its buildings. Earlier this year, the St. Lawrence County Historical Association in Canton, N.Y. referred to the survey when selecting a museum to assist. A letter by Executive Director Trent Trulock that accompanied the contribution, explained the organization's decision to select the Clarke County Museum. "Several months ago, our board of trustees voted to donate 25 percent of the proceeds of our Antique and Artisan Show Quilt Raffle to a museum damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The mission and facilities of the Clarke County Historical Museum seem very much like our own, which is why we chose to make the donation to your institution." Thanks to the donation from the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, Turner Foundation and other donors, the portions of the roofing damaged by hurricanes were repaired last week. Workers took off old and leaking wood shakes from the damaged roof portions of the museum breezeway and Creagh Law Office (Chamber building) and replaced them with sturdy tin roofing. Museum Director Kerry Reid was grateful for the unique gift. "Knowing how much work goes into a fundraiser and how important each dollar is in keeping a small museum open, I realize what a sacrifice it was for the St. Lawrence County Historical Association to include us as a recipient of their fundraising efforts. We are truly appreciative for their generosity in helping us repair our structures."
