Students can be STARS!

The State Department of Education, CLAS (Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools) and Learning Through Sports, have teamed up to provide public schools across Alabama with free access to the award-winning character education program, STAR Sportsmanship. This web-based, interactive learning program is designed to use sports to teach character traits. Kindness, courtesy respect and more are taught using a video-game format that students at all levels will enjoy.

This program was tested last year across Alabama and is being provided in elementary, middle and high school versions. The results confirm that the program decreases unsportsmanlike conduct, while it improves the classroom learning environment and student behavior.

STAR Sportsmanship was conceived by founder and CEO of Learning Through Sports, Brian Shulman. A former captain for the 1988 SEC Champion Auburn Football team, Shulman created STAR Sportsmanship after interactions with his own children, their coaches and their teachers alerted him to the need for an interactive learning program about good sportsmanship.

This week, Grove Hill Elementary School will begin implementing the STAR Sportsmanship program by integrating it into the school-wide Character Education Plan, Classroom Guidance Program and physical education classes. Parents can expect to receive detailed information in the STAR Parent Brochure.
