Off to a great start at GHES!
By Kathy Spidle
GHES Principal

GHES faculty supports Alabama, Math, Sciences and Technology Initiative.
The 2006-2007 school year is off to a great start. Our students are settled in their classes, routines and procedures have been established and their education adventure has begun. GHES welcomed several new faculty and staff members: Mrs. Brandi Van Dee Mrs. Cyndi Bumpers, Mr. Lynn Pace, Mrs. Anna Tucker, Ms. Marlynda Abston and Mrs Christy Clanton. They are excited about teaching and working and are getting rave reviews.

Our faculty and staff had a very busy and productive summer. Contrary to popular belief, our teachers do not get a long, relaxing summer vacation. Most of our faculty and staff continue to improve and develop their teaching strategies by attending workshops and planning sessions throughout the summer. One significant event for the summer of 2006 was AMSTI Training. We spent two weeks in training to give our math and science programs an extra boost. As a result of these efforts, AMSTI will provide GHES with materials and "hands-on" kits to use in each classroom throughout the school year. The training and materials follow closely with the Alabama Course of Study in the areas of math and science. We are looking forward to a year of experiments, discovery and critical thinking.

We are really excited about news we've received concerning the much talked about AYP status of all schools in our state. We are proud to be one of the Title I schools in the state of Alabama to achieve Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) based upon our 2005-06 test data for two years in a row! The report indicates that GHES met 17 goals out of 17. Annual measurable objectives for reading and math, attendance and participation rate are components used to determine AYP status. Our teachers and students work especially hard to prepare for these important tests each year. Our parents also play a critical role in our school's success because they continue to support the importance of testing. Now... the pressure is on. We must not only maintain these high expectations, but raise the standards a bit higher. We can do it... Our students can do it. We are especially proud and have celebrated our successes, this is another school year and there is much work to be done. We want to continue the positive path that we are on by ensuring that we do "Whatever It Takes" so that no child is left behind.

Grove Hill Elementary School invites parents, grandparents, and members of the community to come and read with our students. It is a great way to show the importance of reading in our world today. Everyone becoming involved in our children's education is vital to their success.
