Whatley woman one of two dead in Monroe crash

Monroe County firefighters look at the wreckage of two vehicles after the victims had been cut out Monday afternoon. The wreck happened on Highway 84 just west of Monroeville. Steven Strickland, 17, of Franklin and Cora Hunt Richardson, 49, of Whatley were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that happened around 4:17 p.m. Strickland was headed east in a 1998 Toyota Tacoma pickup (left in the photo) and Richardson was traveling west in a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban. Troopers believe that one of the vehicles hydroplaned on the rain slicked highway and crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic where the two collided nearly head-on. Richardson was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash while Strickland was not. Each was traveling alone in their vehicles. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the fatal crash that temporarily closed the highway in both directions.
