For the first time in over two seasons the Clarke Prep School have two loses and have fallen from the top 10 ranking after they were edged 22-20 by the Fort Dale Eagles last Friday night at Hamilton Field in Grove Hill.

The CPS special team came up with a big play after Fort Dale was forced to punt on their first possession.

Tanner Tucker broke through the line and blocked Davis Watts' kick, giving the Gators the ball at the Fort Dale 36-yard line.

The potential scoring drive was halted with an interception inside the 10-yard line, snuffing out the drive.

On the ensuing Fort Dale drive Tucker's interception of Ty Newton's pass was nullified with a roughing the passer penalty. But six plays later Chad Dickinson came away with an interception that stuck.

It wasn't until 2:03 remained in the first half that either team found the endzone.

The Gators used Brett Bradford and Wesley Morgan to move the ball downfield. Bradford was called on to cap the drive with a 6-yard run. The Gators went to the air as Dickinson hit tight end Grant Newton with the 2-point conversion pass, making it 8-0.

Fort Dale didn't stand around waiting for the break as Newton hit Adam Vickery with a 19-yard TD as time expired. Newton added the 2-point conversion and the score was knotted at 8-8 at halftime.

Midway through the third quarter Fort dale took the lead when Mika Jones scored on a 1-yard run. Taylor Becton intercepted the try for two pass, but the Eagles had a 14-8 lead with 5:13 left in the third.

The Gators responded on the ensuing drive as they stayed in their patented ground attack.

Morgan broke free for a 24-yard scoring run. The try for two came up short, leaving the score tied at 14-14 with 6.5 seconds left in the quarter.

Fort Dale retook the lead in fourth quarter. Keyed by a 33-yard run from Blake Mullins they found paydirt as Mika Jones capped the drive with a 1-yard blast. Jones also ran in the 2-point conversion, giving the Eagles a 22-14 lead with 7:04 left to play.

Clarke Prep responded on the ensuing drive as Morgan raced 18 yards on fourth down for the touchdown. The try for two pass fell short and Fort Dale held a 22-20 lead with 3:20 left in the game.

The Eagles recovered the on-side kick attempt and were able to run out the clock, preserving the 22-20 win.

Morgan led all rushers with 165 yards on 19 carries and a pair of scores. Bradford added 51 yards on eight carries and TD.

Becton led the defense with nine solos, three assists and an interception. Tucker had seven solos, six assists. Adam Jordan had nine solos and four assists. Chris Dunham had eight solos and seven assists.

This Friday the Gators (2-2, 1-2) look to get back on the winning track as they travel to Montgomery to play Taylor Road in a key region game.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
