The Leroy Bears picked a huge region road win as they used a big first half and then never looked back as they pounded Excel's Panthers 36-0 last Friday night at Panther Stadium.

The Leroy win, coupled with the upset loss of Southern Choctaw last week will likely vault the Bears into the top spot in the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 2A rankings.

But in the game it did not take the Bears long to get on the board as quarterback Clint Moseley connected with Patrick Rivers for an 11-yard scoring pass. The attempt failed but with 10:56 left in the first, Leroy led 6-0.

The score was set up after Aerick Davis returned a Panther punt 72-yards, deep into Excel territory.

On the next Bear possession it only took two plays to hit paydirt as Moseley hit Johnny Williams with a short pass that turned into an 80-yard touchdown pitch and catch. Williams then ran in the 2-point conversion to make it a 14-0 Leroy lead with 5:23 left in the first frame.

In the second quarter Leroy got into the scoring fray as Craig Weaver's vicisous hit jarred the ball loose. Chris Weaver scooped up the pigskin and rambled 88-yards for the defensive touchdown. Paul Gartman kicked the PAT and the Bears led 21-0 with 6:46 left in the half.

On the next Excel drive the Leroy defense stopped them cold, forcing a punt. Patrick Rivers took the offering and raced 52-yards, deep into Panther territory.

Three plays later fullback Detrik Powell powered in from 2-yards out. Gartman converted the point-after touchdown try and the lead was 28-0 with 3:21 left in the first half.

On the final play of the third quarter Moseley and J. Williams connected again for a touchdown. This one covered 66-yards on the pass and run. A bad snap on the conversion attempt but Rivers was able to race around the right end for the 2-point conversion, increasing the lead to 36-0.

Neither team was able to score in the fourth period and the Bears brought home the 36-0 region win.

J. Williams had a stellar game at wide out as he hauled in three passes for 160 yards and two scores. Moseley was 6-of-9 passing for 190 yards and three TDs.

This Friday the Bears (3-0, 2-0) take on the Georgiana Panthers. The Panthers are the team that knocked previously unbeaten Southern Choctaw from the top spot last week with a 20-13 victory.

Game time is 7 p.m. at Palmer Stadium.
