The Marengo High School Panthers continued their winning ways this past Friday, Sept. 15 when they shut out the J. F. Shields Panthers 20-0. In the game, which was played in Beatrice, the visiting Panthers scored once in the second quarter and twice in the fourth to claim the victory in what was primarily a defensive battle between the two teams.

From the opening kickoff all the way to the final whistle the battle in the trenches was intense with the smaller Marengo squad going toe to toe with the much larger J. F. Shields. "I was very proud of the effort our players gave in the game Friday," Coach Scottie Jones said. "Although were undersized compared to J. F. Shields, we used our speed and quickness to make up the difference."

With both teams playing good defense including a goal line stand by the Marengo Panthers where they stopped the home standing J. F. Shields four downs inside the ten yard line, the first quarter ended up 0-0.

Marengo broke the ice in the second quarter scoring on a 45-yard ramble by Ronnie Hildreth. The extra-point try failed but the visitors from South Marengo County led 6-0.

That's the way it would stand for the rest of the first half and all the way through the third quarter with the two defenses continuing their dominance of the game.

Early in the fourth quarter Marengo tailback P. J. Brown got loose and scampered 80 yards to add to their lead. Keldred Bouler then connected with Quentin Bouler on a pass for a two-point conversion and Marengo's lead was 14-0.

Later in the period Keldred Bouler finished up the scoring for the night when he barreled in from two yards out. The extra-point try failed leaving the final at 20-0.

Leading the Marengo rushing attack, which piled up 250 yards in the game was P. J. Brown with 93 yards on seven carries. He was followed by Keldred Bouler with 87 yards on 13 carries and Ronnie Hildreth with 85 yards on 13 carries. Each member of the trio scored one touchdown in the game as well.

In the air Keldred Bouler was 2 for 10 for 34 yards with one two-point conversion and one interception. The leading receiver was Quentin Bouler with two catches for the 34 yards and the two-point conversion.

Over on defense Kaylos Pritchett led the Panthers with 15 tackles and one sack followed by Keldred Bouler with 10 tackles, three sacks and two caused fumbles; Quentin Bouler with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery; and Ontarrio Woods with 10 tackles, one sack, two caused fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception.

Kick off for Friday's game is set for 7 p.m.
