Panthers come close but fall to J.F. Shields The Coffeeville High School Panthers fought tooth and nail but came up short 42-32 last Friday night as they hosted the J.F. Shields Panthers in a key region game. Shields jumped out to an early lead when they scored on a short run. The try was no good, but Shields led 6-0. Coffeeville responded when Michael Thomas hit Jeremy Pugh with a 57-yard touchdown pass. Their try for two came up short but they were able to tie the game at 6-6. The Monroe County-based Panthers then added two touchdowns as well as a 2-point conversion and a PAT to take a 21-6 lead.
Coffeeville was not about to go down without a fight as they responded with two scores of their own. The combination of Thomas to Pugh worked already so the two connected for 23- and 18-yard touchdown passes. Both times the try for two came up short, but they cut the lead to 21-18. In the second half Shields scored and kicked the PAT to increase their lead to 28-18. That was when Coffeeville answered with a 34-yard TD pass from Thomas to Pugh and then Thomas scored on an 11-yard run. Robert McRea ran in the 2-point conversion and Coffeeville led 32-28 as the game entered the fourth quarter. The Panthers couldn't hold Shields off as they scored twice in the final period to take the 42-32 region win. Thomas was all over the place for the Panthers as he rushed 22 times for 119 yards and a score as well as completing 14-of-26 passes for 278 yards and four TDs. Pugh hauled in six passes for 175 yards and four TDs. Henry Coker had 61 yards on 15 carries.
This Friday the Panthers (0-4, 0-3) host John Essex as they step out of region play. Game time is 7 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
