Proposed north-south freeway gets hearing

Representatives from the Alabama Department of Transportation will hear comments from local residents on the study for a proposed West Alabama Freeway during a public meeting Thursday, Oct. 5 from 5 until 7 p.m. at the ALDOT office in Grove Hill

The corridor would run from I-10 in Mobile to I-59 at the "quad" of Tuscumbia, Florence, Sheffield and Muscle Shoals.

Just under $6 million in federal funds has been set aside for the study.

Several U.S. Congress members and Don Siegleman began pushing for the study during Siegelman's term as governor.

"This would link Mobile with the quad area, which would link two ports. It is expected the freeway would help with economic development in the state," Lou Wallace of the local ALDOT office explained.

The orange area shows the corridor study area. The green indicates subcorridor study areas. As you can see, the green areas crisscross through Clarke County.
