Last minute field goal lifts JHS
The 92nd meeting between Clarke County High School and Jackson High School was highlighted with big plays and a thrilling finish as the Aggies won 23-20 on a field goal with less than a minute left in the game. The game was played last Friday night at Simpkins Stadium-Legion Field in Jackson. "You can't say enough about the support of our fans," Bulldog Coach Allan Floyd said. "They were on their feet the entire game, cheering the team." Before the fans could get in their seats good the Aggies had a two touchdown lead as on the first play of the game Kent Myer connected with Demarquis Besteda for a 69-yard score. J.D Mitchell kicked the PAT and the score was 7-0 with 11:40 to go in the first. On Clarke County's first play a fumble ended the drive and on the second play Terrance Roper scored on a 16-yard run. The kick failed but with less than two minutes gone off the clock Jackson had a 13-0 advantage. The Bulldogs did not lay down after falling behind. After taking over following an Aggie punt, the Bulldog offense went to work. They covered 52-yards in just nine plays with Kenneth Kimbrough ending the drive with a 26-yard scoring run. The try for two came up short, but CCHS cut into the lead 13-6 with less than a minute left in the opening quarter. In the second quarter the Bulldogs put together another scoring drive. This one covered 73-yards in 12 plays and again Kimbrough was called on to cap it. This time he powered in from 2-yards out. Again the try for two came up short and with no time left in the half the Bulldogs drew closer 13-12. In the third quarter the two teams traded possessions before CCHS put together their final scoring drive of the game as Kimbrough scored from 1-yard out to cap an 82-yard drive. Tyler Walker hit Terrance Frazier with the 2-point conversion pass, making it 20-13 with 1:46 left in the quarter.
Jackson was able to tie the game midway through the final period when Andrew Ezell scored on an 18-yard blast. Mitchell kicked the critical PAT to knot the game at 20-20 with 6:04 left. On the ensuing posession QB Tyler Walker hit Duane Owens with a 52-yard completion to move the ball to the 17-yard line. From there they moved down to the 7-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. From there the Aggies started marching. Myer hit Will Stevens with a 8-yard gain and Broderick Washington with a 34-yard pick-up, added with three CCHS penalties equaling 35-yards, Jackson moved to the Bulldog 7-yard line before the drive stalled. From there Mitchell came on and kicked the game-winning 22-yard field goal with just 1:18 left on the clock, giving the Aggies a 23-20 come-from behind victory of their county rivals. CCHS' Kimbrough paced all offensive performers as he rushed 33 times for 251 yards and three TDs. "The numbers I have been having are only happening because of the great blocking I have been getting," Kimbrough said. "Danny (Norris), Otis (Jackson), Maurice (Bettis), Marquentrell (Lambert), Jamarcus (McCoy), Jarvis (Packer), Britt (Chapman), Duane (Owens) and Jamarcus (Robinson) all are the reason. "I feel if we keep playing as a group and as a team we can win the rest of our games and do well in the playoffs." Jackson QB Myer was 11-of-21 passing for 170 yards and a TD. Besteda hauled in five passes for 95 yards. The Bulldogs (3-2, 3-0) look to rebound this week as they host Sumter County while the Aggies (3-2, 2-1) take to the road to Atmore to take on Escambia County. Both of the tilts are against region foes and both start at 7 p.m.
