Call it karma or a quirk of nature, but just prior to Sweet Water and Leroy kicking off their game last Friday night, a flock of geese flew over in a "V" formation: "V" as in victory and the name of the field in Sweet Water is Victory Field.

It turned out to be an omen of things to come as the third-ranked 1A Bulldogs exploded for a 35-6 win over the top-ranked 2A Bears at Palmer Stadium.

"It is a big win for this program and this team," Bulldog Coach Stacy Luker said. "We looked at our non-region schedule and knew we needed to play good competition."

They have played the top-ranked teams in Class 4A (Thomasville) and 2A (Leroy).

Sweet Water's defense forced five turnovers in the contest, returning two for scores.

In the first quarter the Bears were forced to punt. The ball sailed over the punter's head and Sweet Water took over near the 25-yard line.

Demarquis Williams took the Wingback reverse in for a 10-yard TD, but an inadvertent whistle nullified the score.

Two plays later Drew Luker scored on a 5-yard quarterback keeper.

Ty Glass kicked the PAT and with 5:12 left in the first quarter Sweet Water led 7-0.

After forcing another punt the Bulldogs had the ball deep in their own territory.

On the first play Luker dialed in Travis Young for a 45-yard completion.

Then junior tailback Anthony Landrum capped the drive with an 18-yard sprint.

Glass again converted the kick as Sweet Water increased the lead to 14-0 with 2:58 left in the first quarter.

With just over 7:00 minutes to go before halftime Luker scored on a 1-yard sneak as the Bulldogs added to their lead. Glass' kick made it 21-0.

In the closing minutes of the first half Sweet Water put the game out of reach as they scored two touchdowns in just one minute of play.

Travis Young stepped in front of Clint Moseley's pass at the 17-yard line and returned it 83-yards for the Bulldog touchdown. Glass made good on the PAT and the lead was 28-0 with 1:39 to go.

On the ensuing Bear possession Tyrese Lockett scooped up a Leroy fumble and rambled 32-yards for the next SWHS score. Glass remained perfect on the point-after touchdown tries and with :39 seconds left the Bulldogs had a 35-0 stranglehold.

Neither team scored in the third frame and with 11:46 left to play in the game Ronald Bracy scored on a 19-yard run. The attempt failed as the Bears cut into the lead 35-6.

Two interceptions in the second half ended potential Leroy scoring drives and the Bulldogs came away with a 35-6 win.

Landrum led all rushers with 94 yards on 15 carries and a score. Dominic Holt had 38 yards on 13 carries. Luker added 29 yards on nine carries with two TDs.

Defensively Holt had seven stops and a sack. Tyrese Lockett added six stops, a sack and a fumble recovery. Landrum had six tackles and a fumble recovery. Jacques Lockett had a pair of sacks. Demarquis Williams had an interception.

Leroy QB Moseley was 14-of-27 passing for 183 yards.

Detrik Powell added 59 yards rushing.

This Friday the Bears (4-1, 3-0) look to regroup as they travel to Flomaton to take on the Hurricanes as region play resumes.

The Bulldogs (4-1, 3-0) hope to continue their winning ways as they go to Thomaston to play A.L. Johnson in a key region match-up.

Both games start at 7 p.m.
