The Clarke Prep School Gators kept their playoff hopes alive as they beat Morgan Academy 21-7 last Friday night at Hamilton Field.

It was a battle of the reigning Class AA and AAA teams, only this year the stakes were a spot in the playoff. The loser will have a tough hill to climb to keep their hopes alive.

Neither team was able to get anything going towards paydirt in the first half.

Clarke Prep took their initial possession of the second half and put together a scoring drive. Behind the running of fullback Wesley Morgan and tailback Brett Bradford they moved 57-yards in nine plays.

Morgan ended the drive with an 11-yard run. Hunter Mayton kicked the PAT and CPS led 7-0 with 4:02 left in the second half.

The cheers of the home crowd did not last long as Morgan's kick returner brought the Gator kickoff back 85-yards for the Senator touchdown.

The added PAT tied the game at 7-7 at the 3:50 mark of the third quarter.

Clarke Prep started at their own 39-yard line following the ensuing kickoff.

The drive continued through the end of the third quarter and into the fourth quarter.

Bradford capped it with a 6-yard run with 10:04 left in the game. Mayton's kick increased the CPS lead to 14-7.

Later in the period the Gator defense set the table for the game's final score as Adam Henson recovered a Senator fumble at the Morgan 36-yard line.

Three plays later Bradford broke free for a 26-yard touchdown. Mayton was again perfect on the point-after touchdown try and Clarke Prep had a 21-7 lead with 2:01 left to play.

The Senators tried to put together a scoring drive but the push ended at the 19-yard line as time expired and the Gators held on for a 21-7 region win.

Morgan led all rushers with 136 yards on 26 carries with a TD. Bradford added 106 yards on 14 carries and a pair of TDs.

Bradford led the defense with six solos and three assists. Tanner Tucker had three solo stops, two assists and a pass defended.

This Friday the Gators (4-2, 3-2) travel to Bessemer to take on the top-ranked Rebels.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
