Litter Awareness Week activities are detailed

Litter Awareness Week was observed in Clarke County Sept. 11-16 and municipalities throughout the county, along with the Clarke County Citizens Against Littering, spearheaded several activities.

A booth was set up at the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital Health and Safety Fair Sept. 9. Committee members passed out 150 car litter bags and large garbage bags and anti-littering coloring books. Wanda Drinkard was the winner of a garbage can, given away by the Grove Hill Chamber of Commerce.

A large dumpster was placed behind Grove Hill Town Hall during the week so residents would have a place to dispose of litter they picked up.

Students in the after school programs at Grove Hill Elementary School and Wilson Hall Middle School cleaned their school grounds during the week.

The Wilson Hall Middle School 4-H After School Club passed out 150 car litter bags and litter information at Dunn's Exxon in Grove Hill Sept. 14.

All four schools in Grove Hill included facts and information in their morning announcements during the week.

Members of the Coffeeville Beautification Club set up litter roadblocks at Highway 69 and River Street and at the Exxon Station on Highway 84.

Joanne Courington, Dr. Edwina Hart, Renee Henderson, Neal Houston, Rita and Lloyd Wilson passed out 250 litter bags and flyers promoting litter prevention.

Donations for the anti-litter campaign were collected from some citizens in the area.

Students, faculty and staff members at Coffeeville High School were commended for keeping the campus clean.
