From Our Files 12 years ago Former Democratic governor and Republican gubernatorial candidate Fob James was in Clarke County politicking for votes in the upcoming General Election. Incumbent Gov. Jim Folsom and former Mississippi Gov. Williams Winters were in Jackson the same week to talk about regional economic development efforts. Terry Foster, principal of Grove Hill Elementary School, was named Citizen of the Year by the Grove Hill Civitan Club. The new Wal-Mart Supercenter opened in Thomasville. The new 150,000 square foot store replaced a smaller one in the town. Sheldon Day was manager and a news release said 275 new jobs would be created. Oct. 20, 1994
40 years ago The Grove Hill Chamber of Commerce elected new officers. They included John Becton, president; Cecil Pruitt, vice president; Donald Duff, treasurer; and Nelson Reynolds, secretary. Directors elected were Merwin York, Floyd Burge, Watrous Garrett, Bill Brady, Jimmy Wiggins and John Reid. Burglars hit Harper High School and Joe M. Gillmore Elementary School in Jackson, Mackey Branch School in Gosport and G. C. Paul's Farm Store in Grove Hill, all on the night of Oct. 11. Jimmie Kay Jackson of Fulton was elected homecoming queen for Clarke County High School. The Alabama Public Service Commission scheduled a hearing for Southern Railway Co.'s request to demolish the old depot at Suggsville. Oct. 20, 1966
52 years ago A hearing on proposed locks and dams for the Tombigbee River was held in Jackson. The many property owners, farmers, timbermen and sawmill owners represented said they favored progress but were not in favor of the proposal that they said would take a heavy toll on Clarke County timber, pasture and farm lands. The Grove Hill Theater was undergoing a remodeling. The building was being extended, a new and larger screen installed and new projection equipment added. Over 200 new seats would be created by the expansion. Meanwhile, the new Area Drive-In was slated to open Oct. 28, featuring "The Student Prince" as its first movie. Mr. Waterall said his drive-in was one of the most modern equipped of its kind in the area. Criminal jury term of Clarke County Circuit Court was slated to start Oct. 25. The term would be historic in that it would be the last such court to be held in the old 1899 courthouse. Demolition was to start the following week as work was nearly completed on the new [current] courthouse. The Clarke County Board of Education's statement of revenues and expenditures listed just over $875,000 in revenues for the 1953-54 year and almost $827,000 in expenditures. 74 years ago An apparent sign of the lean Depression that was currently at hand was Probate Judge J. G. Cunninghame's report that only 43 business and privilege licenses had been issued by his office to date. At the same time in 1931, 340 had been issued. Automobile owners were not doing any better, only 65 out of the 1,500 licenses issued the previous year, had been paid. The Bethel Methodist Church, near Clay Hill, north of Thomasville was scheduled to celebrate its 100th anniversary Sunday, Oct. 23. Today, only the front steps and foundation stones remain of the old church, and a monument denoting its history. Brady Hardware in Grove Hill advertised Goodyear Pathfinder tires for as low as $4.55 each in pairs. The Bank of Grove Hill, "Clarke County's Central Bank," urged people to save, noting that it paid 4 percent on saving accounts. J. B. Brewer of Gosport announced the formation of a hunting club on his 3,065 acres. The club would be limited to 20 members each paying $20 per season. "Game hogs and law violators not wanted."
