Child Advocacy Center director is Citizen of Year
By Kathryn F. Pickard

Mary English is active in community.
"It was a complete surprise. I've always thought the Citizen of the Year was a good way to recognize people in our community and I always tried to attend the banquet, but I never thought I would be honored," Mary English laughed.

English has been chosen by the Grove Hill Civitan Club as Grove Hill's Citizen of the Year.

In the letter of nomination, submitted by Terry Norris, president of the Grove Hill Arts Council, English was cited for her work with Grove Hill United Methodist Church, the Clarke County Regional Child Advocacy Center and the arts council, as well as her involvement and care for her friends and family.

She has served as youth director at the church for many years and has served the church as Lay Delegate to the Annual Conference and as vice-president of the United Methodist Women.

English is Director of the CAC and counts it as one of her passions.

"My job with the CAC brought me back to Grove Hill to work and it is also one of my pet projects. We are busy and we are expanding into Choctaw and Washington Counties. We are close to having a satellite office in Choctaw County. We have already surpassed the number of forensic interviews we had expected to do," she said.

English said she is having a lot of fun working with the arts council, on which she serves as vice-president. "Terry Norris does a great job and I've really enjoyed working on different projects with them. The arts council is helping put Grove Hill on the map. I've especially enjoyed working with the children's plays we have put on. The proceeds go to the children's center, so I get to work for two of my favorite organizations," she laughed.

Another pet project is the Grove Hill Revitalization committee. "I feel this is a step forward for Grove Hill. I think it's been a good thing, whether we get the money to do it or not,"

English is also treasurer of the Grove Hill Community Study Club, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Grove Hill Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Clarke County Community Development Foundation.

"A lot of people have been working hard to help Grove Hill. I'm one of many. I'm overwhelmed at being chosen. I'm thankful I was nominated, much less chosen," she smiled.
