Gators handed tough loss by Rebs
Bessemer 45, CPS 14

The Clarke Prep Gators suffered a tough 45-14 loss at the hands of the top-ranked Rebels of Bessemer Academy last Friday night in Bessemer.

The Rebels hit on big plays in the first half as they built a 25-0 lead.

They scored on a 78-yard TD pass, a 31-yard TD pass, and a 45-yard scoring strike and then on a 6-yard run.

In the second half Bessemer added two more scores to increase the lead to 38-0 before Clarke Prep's offense hit paydirt.

With 3:18 left in the third quarter Wesley Morgan broke free for a 21-yard touchdown run. The play capped a 7-play, 65-yard drive.

Hunter Mayton kicked the PAT cutting the score to 38-7.

On the first play of the fourth quarter Tanner Tucker hit Clay Furrow with a 3-yard TD pass. Mayton's kick cut the lead even further 38-14 with 11:55 left to play.

On the ensuing drive Bessemer padded the lead with a 47-yard scoring run, making the final tally 45-14.

Morgan paced the Gator offensive attack with 65 yards on 16 carries. Brett Bradford added 36 yards on 12 carries.

Tucker was 2-of-4 passing for 37 yards and a TD.

This Friday the Gators (4-3) take to the road to meet the Warriors of Cottage Hill (6-1).

The game will be key in allowing Clarke Prep to control their own playoff destiny.

Game time in Mobile is 7:30 p.m.
